My 3-Month Stay in Raleigh, NC

This year has been a disaster. From living in the house with neighbor's dog who yaps non-stop to a car accident and nails in tires, and several other "I can't believe this is happening" situations, I felt the need to get away. I rented an apartment in Raleigh about 20 min walking distance from the downtown. I left the house in "ready to rent" condition, but have not found a tenant by the time I had to leave.

I arrived at the apartment in late April, of course, passing by Augustino Gusto Bakery, one of my favorite bakeries in the area. The apartment was located above the garage, so it took me a little while to bring the boxes in. It looked clean, but very "bare bones" with minimal supplies (even the toilet paper was missing!). The landlord was away and didn't think he was supposed to provide any supplies. I was a bit disappointed but liked the apartment in general.

I did find a cockroach in the dishwasher, a live one too...

Somehow the very first evening (on the day of my arrival) I decided to have bought tickets to a play. Lo and behold, it would be the only play I would attend in the 3 months in Raleigh.

The first night was really uncomfortable as the bed was very very soft. I ended up removing the mattress topper which made it okay. BUT... there was no barking dogs and I felt at ease for the first time in months. And I was in the middle of a large city... That tells you something.

The landlord told me that he had to change the siding to the garage, and it might be noisy during the first week. Indeed, it was more than just noisy!

Luckily, it was only a week. Overall, the neighborhood was very quiet. I took walks almost every day either walking downtown or just to the cemetery. That's right, the cemetery was just across the street and had a lovely trail in a peaceful environment. I also did some running in the mornings when it was not too hot. Sadly, most of the days were hot and humid.

One of the things I was hoping to accomplish in Raleigh is to get Videri chocolate. I tried it for the first time back in 2022 when it was on sale at a grocery store and absolutely loved it. This time the price was quadruple at $12.99! I got two bars but that was a luxurious purchase...

I thought I would go to restaurants frequently but I ended up enjoying good food at home. After renewing my Costco membership, now that I had a warehouse 10 minutes away from my apartment, I bought a ton of delicious items including tofu and mushrooms and experimented with new recipes.

I did go to meetups at least once a week to socialize and meet new people. One of the places I went to was Namu Korean Eats where I tried Gimbap for the first time. It's like sushi but larger in size and with lots of veggies.

I did some local hiking as well. One of my favorite places was Umstead Park. It was about 20 minutes away and had great trails. Frequently, it was packed with people, especially on weekends when some would line up to enter the park prior to its opening to get a parking spot.

In May, I also visited a birding workshop at the Walnut Creek Wetlands Center organized by Wake Audubon, a local non-profit with a grand mission to "foster knowledge, appreciation, and enjoyment of nature; to encourage responsible environmental stewardship; to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats, for the benefit of humanity and the earth’s biological diversity."

The workshop was very educational as I have never really paid much attention to birds around me. They showed a few useful apps to recognize birds by their song and even offered to borrow binoculars to use in the hand-on part of the workshop where we went outside to spot the birds. I've been using that app ever since!

I signed up for a month of yoga not realizing that it was warm yoga at 80F! I hate hot yoga, but I also hate warm yoga. Needless to say that I didn't continue my membership after the initial trial.

At the end of May, I ended up renting my house for 3 months to someone. In the first week of June, the tenant already broke the dishwasher by using too much detergent. A stressful situation like this prompted me to drive back home to make sure that the water did not cause any damage. I would end up replacing the dishwasher in another nightmare of events lasting through June.

June was not as active of a month. I still went out to meetups but life in Raleigh was becoming a routine consisting of gym sessions, running, cooking, TV and occasional outings to local parks. I did decide to bring my car in to yet another dealership to address the mirror and the engine noise. This time I was taken seriously. They investigated the issue and completed carbon cleaning which minimized the noise. My car was in for almost 2 weeks, and in that timeframe I had a loaner. All of that was done on the warranty and I am forever grateful to Johnson Subaru of Cary. While I was told that the issue is most likely would return given the direct fuel injection, at least for now I have a semi-brand new car. If I realized how frequently I would have to bring this car to the dealership, I would never have bought a new car.

I also took advantage of the healthcare system that appeared to be much better than in Tennessee and got a bunch of tests done.

I started attending Yelp events as it's been a few years since I was able to go to any. It was refreshing to try new businesses this way.

The restaurant of June for me was Sushioki located in Durham that offered sushi in a burrito! It was incredibly delicious, and the size was way above what I expected.

July was a very hot month. Even mornings were not feasible for walking at times, although I was getting used to my morning runs. I would rarely go outside during the day, and even the evenings were intolerable with both heat and humidity.

The trend of "nail in the tire" continued though, and I had to bring my car to the dealership to get this handled. Luckily, this time it was a quick fix and under the warranty that I got separately when I bought the car. Heck, that warranty that I got free of charge already has been worth it! 2 dents and a nail in the tire repaired!

I went to a few Yelp events and even got a free facial, something that I haven't done in years. One of the events was on a rooftop of a hotel at a restaurant. Very nice set up, albeit in a very hot weather.

And I did a lot of neighborhood exploration. Where could I see myself living? Where could I afford to live? What can I afford? All these questions resulted in multiple house viewings and sadly, resulted in nothing but pure exhaustion. Perhaps it's not the time and the place? Maybe... I had an option to either stay in Raleigh in August or do something else as my tenant still had another month on his lease. More to come where I decided to go!

New Orleans for Christmas

Wrapping up this year, I decided to visit New Orleans, aka the Big Easy, aka a Mardi Gras capital. I have never been to Louisiana before, and while it was not on my bucket list, I wanted to visit it at some point in time. Two of the friends of mine are originally from there and headed to NOLA for a month visiting family. I decided to meet up with them to get more of a local experience.

I planned my trip over 5-6 days to not rush as I usually do. I had the time off from work and didn't want to stay at home for the holidays. Below was my planned itinerary, although as always things didn't exactly align to it.

Day 1: Scenic Drives & Birmingham, AL

  • 🏞 Little River Canyon: A quick pit stop for stunning views and fresh air.
  • 🏨 Fairfield Inn & Suites: My stay in Birmingham.
  • 🍽 Dinner with Strangers at The Harvest: A unique dining experience with delicious food and great company.

Day 2: Arrival in New Orleans

  • 🚙 Road Trip Vibes: Drive and crossing into Louisiana.
  • 🏡 Check-in at my AirBnb: A warm welcome to my home base in New Orleans.
  • 👫 Meet Up with my friends at Canal Street: Catching up with a friends and soaking in the later afternoon vibes of the city.

Day 3: Exploring NOLA

  • ☕️ Morning Coffee at Old Road Coffee: Starting the day with a cozy café visit.
  • 🌳 City Park: Gorgeous greenery, peaceful walks, and a cemetery.
  • 🐊 Jean Lafitte National Park: A dive into Louisiana’s rich natural beauty and history.
  • 🚙 Meet up with my friends: No plans.

Day 4: Christmas Eve in New Orleans

  • 🎄 Coffee Start: Grabbing coffee at Starbucks.
  • 🏛 Laura Plantation Tour: Learning about Creole history and heritage.
  • 🍴 Culinary History Tour: Tasting the flavors of New Orleans on a guided food adventure.

My friend kindly agreed to watch Kitty at his house, and after a pre-Christmas celebration exchanging gifts, we parted ways as I headed towards New Orleans the following morning.

My first stop was at Little River Canyon in Alabama. Originally, I planned to stop at Little River Falls and head to Birmingham, but after meeting a volunteer at the trailhead who handed me the map assuring that I should drive along the Little River Parkway to see all the scenic points, I decided to do that.

While NOLA was not my favorite place, I found it to be different from other cities I visited. I especially enjoyed the history and culture, and would skip the food tour or anything food-related. I guess my taste is a bit different nowadays, I don't like greasy food!

West Virginia and Shenandoah National Park

Camping is not really my thing. It's not that I don't want to camp, it's just that I need a shower and a toilet. I can't imagine having to sleep in my own sweat after hiking. I am also scared of bugs and bears, more or less at least. My aspiration to experience nature in a different way exceeded my normalcy this time, to a degree. I decided to go car camping.

Actually, I made that decision in the summer and reserved a campground spot for mid-July. The weather that weekend was hitting high 90s, so I moved the booking to late October which also coincided with the most visited time of the year due to leaves changing their colors. I built the rest of the trip around that camping night and booked 2 other nights on Airbnb. No need to challenge myself too much in one trip...

My trip started from Knoxville where I dropped off Kitty at my friend's house. I drove 5 or so hours to West Virginia to hike Falls of Hill Creek, a short one and a half mile trail to the falls.

One of the 3 falls on the trail

Leaves are really amazing this time of the year!

My second hike a longer one, just over 3 miles round trip. High Rocks Trail was a stunning trail with incredible views.

After the hikes, I headed to my Airbnb. It was a remote apartment rental above someone's garage. It even had a propane heater! It was very peaceful and quiet.

The following day I had a reservation for a day trip on Greenbrier Express, a train ride going in the forest along Greenbrier River. Cass Bold Knob Trip, the most popular train ride was already booked for that day, so I had to try the new excursion. I was not disappointed. The train slowly went from Cass, WV to Durbin, WV, both small towns in the middle of nowhere with zero cell service.

Riding the Greenbrier Express was like stepping into a postcard. The train left the historic town of Cass and followed the sparkling Greenbrier River through the gorgeous, tree-covered mountains of the Monongahela National Forest. Along the way, I saw a river otter, and a hawk soaring overhead—it felt like nature was putting on a show just for us. When we reached the tiny village of Durbin, lunch was waiting, and I grabbed a basic "bologna sandwich" type of meal near the depot. Honestly, lunch was a huge disappointment for the price I paid for the excursion.

The train ride was done just past 3 PM local time, and it was time for me to drive another 2 hours to my next Airbnb. I got there just before dark. It was a tiny house, very comfortably furnished. I had a good night of sleep but had to wake up really early as I had to hike Old Rag Mountain in Shenandoah National Park the following morning.

Driving at night is not my favorite thing, but I was determined to arrive just after the sunrise to find parking at this popular trailhead where you need a permit to hike the trail. Indeed, I got there on time to park in the closest parking lot. I bought my National Park Pass and headed uphill. I felt good until I got to the "scramble" area. It was not just scrambling, but full on climbing. After a few attempts to descend safely I made a decision to turn around. It hurt my ego a bit, but safety was my number one concern. I wanted to play it safe.

After the failed attempt to concur the mountain, I decided to head to my campground, but wanted to do some more hiking and stopped at Dark Hollow Falls Trail. The hike was more challenging than I expected, and very very very crowded. Almost to the point of not being enjoyable.

My first experience arriving at a campground was exhilarating. I checked in at the entrance and quickly found my spot. I was car camping sleeping in my car. That's why you get a Subaru, I guess!

I took a shower for $5 at the campground before bed and felt completely refreshed. The neighbors were relatively quiet, and the night went well. The only challenge was me sliding in my car as I discovered there was a bit of an angle from the top of my folded seat. It still was relatively comfortable as being only five foot tall I could fit with my legs stretched out.

Before heading out home in the morning, I made a hot cup of instant coffee with oat milk and decided to go on another hike Rose River Falls just a few minutes away from the campground. That is the best thing about camping - easy access to trails without having to drive.

While the falls didn't impress me much, the peace and quiet of the trail this early in the morning did. I stopped at a few spots before leaving the park to take the last few shots of the colorful forest.

Visit to Toronto During Hurricane Helene

My trip to visit my cousin in Toronto was planned 3 months ago. I asked my friend to pet sit Kitty for me while I was away and headed to the airport in Asheville on September 25th. The weather forecast for that weekend in Toronto was sunny and warm, but it was not great for the area I was flying from. I was concerned a bit, but not very worried. I drove to Asheville and got on my flight just past noon.

The flight arrived on schedule, and my cousin met me at the airport. It was the first time in the past 10 years I saw her so I was really excited to meet her daughters as well. After dinner and a short conversation, we headed to bed.

The following day we dropped off the kids at school and drove to Niagara-on-the-Lake, a small town about an hour and a half away from Toronto. It had a wonderful suburban vibe. We walked by the lake and explored the town a bit stopping for sushi for dinner. After the meal, we headed to a small winery for wine tasting and then had another walk at a park nearby.

The second day together we spent locally walking by the lake, enjoying lunch at a small and quirky restaurant and eating a ton of delicious pastries and cakes. In fact, I was so sugar overloaded that I could not even think about more dessert. I didn't take as many pictures as I should have of the dessert, but it was a lot more that you can see below.

I was heading home the next day on September 28th, but it was not meant to be. I had a layover in Atlanta. The flight there from Toronto was flawless, but as I was departing I got a notification that my Asheville flight got cancelled. I was really stressed out by that knowing that my car was there. The next flight to AVL was not until the next day. After going back and forth, I was able to get another flight to the local airport to home (TRI - Tri-Cities airport). I asked my friend to pick me up. The flight was not leaving Atlanta for several hours, so I walked around for a while. Another concern I had was that this was the first time I decided to check my luggage at the gate in Toronto, so I was worried that I would lose my bag due to this flight change. In the end, my flight did make it to Tennessee without delays, and I was able to safely retrieve my bag.

I got a notification from my friend that my house was okay with no damage. Here is the video of strong winds behind my house that my friend too.

Without my car though I felt stranded, and my friend was going home the following day.

We attempted to drive to Asheville the next day, but all roads were closed. I decided to rent a car the next week and do it myself when I heard of roads opening up. Lo and behold, on Monday I saw on Facebook that someone was able to drive to Asheville using a route from Greenville, TN. I rented a car and 2.5 hours later I was in Asheville. The level of destruction was incredible. I stopped to get gas at a grocery store, but all gas stations were out of gas. I had to return the car without refilling it. I was lucky to have found my car undamaged and with half a tank of gas which would allow me to get to Tennessee. That was incredible luck as I remember thinking prior to the trip that I should fill up my tank before leaving my car at the airport, but decided not to. Five hours later and with a moderate charge from the rental company I was home with my car. It was liberating to have my transportation means back. You take so many things for granted and realize that only when you lose them, even for a little while.

For me, this local disaster was an ordeal, inconvenience, but for many others a life-changing devastation. The hurricane came over my town with force and destroyed the town I loved so much.
