Lake Hodges in Escondido, CA

Lake Hodges is a recreational area near Escondido. It supplies water to the San Dieguito Water District and Santa Fe Irrigation District. It's located right next to the Olivenhain Reservoir, another water storage area. The Lake Hodges Overlook Trail should really be renamed "Olivenhain Reservoir Trail", since most of the trail wraps around the reservoir, but I guess it would not sound as grand.

The trail itself is not very long and fully exposed to the sun. There are so many intersections and forks that you can easily go into the discovery mode and end up exploring more than you hoped. On the other hand, these minor diversions lead to the same trail, so getting lost is really not an option. The trail is pretty heavily trafficked and in some stretches is rather narrow. Wearing long sleeves or ate least long pants is non-negotiable.

The views are pretty incredible as you can see below. You can see the lake on one side and the reservoir on the other when you get to the higher elevation. The first several miles are uphill, so I got a pretty good workout, but once you reach to the top, the trail flattens out a bit.

This is a worthy trail to come back to because of great views and proximity to the city. With that said, the parking lot is rather small, but some parking is available on the side of the road. The park opens at 8 AM.
